Mokona (モコナ,   Mokona?) is a supporting character of Magic Knight Rayearth that is also featured in many CLAMP crossovers.

Appearance[]

Mokona resembles a bunny at most, white and fluffy with long ears and feet. It's noted by Fuu that he is seemingly elastic and bouncy. A red circular gem adorns his forehead, though during certain moments, it has glowed blue, green, or yellow. He does not have paw pads, but rather a singular pink pad on his feet and paws. He also has a small tail, which mostly goes unnoticed unless being viewed from behind.

Personality[]

Cute, affectionate, and mischievous, Mokona is the perfect adventure companion. He assisted Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu on their quest to become Magic Knights, and was there for their every need, except during battle. Using the gem on his forehead, Mokona magically provided for the girls' needs during their quest, such as shelter (or more accurately, a miniature hotel room), food, and transportation.

He genuinely cares for the girls, expressing sadness and concern for their wellbeing on their quests. Despite running away from battles with monsters, Mokona did bravely sacrifice himself to save Hikaru from being captured by the monster made of light, which had already gotten Umi and Fuu. Mokona is best known for being mischievous; he frequently teases Umi, and the fairy Primera whenever she'd try to interfere with Lantis and Hikaru.

An observation about how Mokona's behavior changes throughout both seasons, he starts off as cute and chirpy like a wild animal, and transitions to being cute and easygoing.

Mokona seemed to get well along with Presea, as Presea jokingly teases Mokona about how she'd punish him when she discovered him making a mess of her study, either by seeing how far his ears could stretch or hanging him by his feet.

History[]

At some point, Mokona was entrusted to Clef by Princess Emeraude when she decided to summon the Magic Knights. Clef later entrusted Mokona to Presea before meeting Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu.

Mokona True Form

Mokona's purpose was to give provisions to the Knights during their journey, as well as facilitate communication between the Knights and Clef.

In the second part of the manga, during an all-out battle between Autozam, Fahren, and Chizeta, Mokona's true identity is revealed as the Creator of Earth and Cephiro. Seeing how war had devastated Earth, Mokona created Cephiro and its Pillar system to make all people happy. After commenting on those who had wanted to become the Pillar (or destroy it), Mokona sends Hikaru and Eagle, whose hearts were the strongest, to Tokyo to decide the new Pillar.

After declaring Hikaru to be the new Pillar, Mokona reveals that the loser, Eagle, would disappear; as Hikaru struggles, Lantis, Umi, and Fuu try to persuade Mokona to open the gate. Mokona finally opens it, and Umi and Fuu pull the two competitors out of Earth.

After Hikaru decides to abolish Cephiro's Pillar System, Mokona returns back to the "adorable" Mokona. He and the three Mashin then leave Cephiro for another universe.

Anime[]

In the anime, Mokona was not revealed to have created Earth and Cephiro nor was he able to communicate. Mokona also remained in Cephiro at the end of the anime.

OVA[]

Mokona's role in the 'Rayearth' OVA is quite minor, primarily limited to acting as an intermediary the first time the Rune Gods speak to Hikaru, Fuu, and Umi, plus gifting each with their Ovum Gem that acts as a symbol of their pact with their respective deity.

Abilities[]

Mokona can create items with the red gem on his forehead. He can also project images or messages through the gem, as was the case with Clef's messages. He's also able to create transports that could carry the Magic Knights over distances they could not get to on foot.

Relationships[]

Hikaru Shidou[]

Mokona usually sleeps beside Hikaru at night. Hikaru seems to understand Mokona well. In the first season, Mokona once sacrificed himself, by pushing Hikaru away to save her from one of the dark creatures of Cephiro that was hunting the Magic Knights. After the creature was vanquished, Mokona was okay.

Umi Ryuuzaki[]

Umi and Mokona both tease each other; part of their banter is chasing each other around.

Fuu Hououji[]

These two don't interact much, but Fuu is a great interpreter, along with Hikaru. Fuu is the only one to address Mokona as "Sir Mokona".

Presea[]

Presea and Mokona got along like owner and pet. In the beginning of the story, Mokona trashed Presea's office, so she would think of ways to punish him, such as hanging him up in the hallway by his feet or pulling his ears to see how far they stretch. In the anime, Mokona was deeply saddened by her death and goes on to join the Magic Knights in their quest.

Primera[]

Mokona protects Hikaru from Primera's jealous attitude. He either eats her or sits on her until she gets confused and separated from her companion, Lantis.

Trivia[]

  • Mokona Modoki, two characters that appears in two of CLAMP's other works, xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa RESERVOIR Chronicle, were created by the two series' Yūko Ichihara and Clow Reed after meeting the original, albeit with slight differences. It was also Mokona who provided Yūko and Clow with the knowledge of alternate dimensions.
  • Mokona's character design is similar to that of the Jump Card from Cardcaptor Sakura, another CLAMP work.
